Bones Discovered Left Undignified
Reno Bones, including two skulls are now at Washoe County’s Coroner’s Office. That’s after a construction crew uncovered them while repairing a road on Hymer and 21 Street in Sparks.
Last winter we reported on this area with local residents and history buffs concerned an historical cemetery in the area would continue to lose respect and dignity. Apparently those fears were realized last night as more details emerge.

Nevada’s Mental Health Hospital buried poor patients on the site. The problem is as the year’s have gone by and the area has changed, there are no clear lines as the where the cemetery begins and ends.
”It's wrong it's disrespectful to the people that if they have any family members left I know I wouldn't want my loved ones dug up whether they're ancient or not,” says Sparks resident Jessica Boesen.
Crews are repaving the road here on 21st and there is also a water line project in the same area. But just up the street near Hymer sits the hospital cemetery. There are people buried on this site that use to house Pinion Park, to the south a vacant lot where more bodies are buried.
“Earlier this month there were also some remains found as well. They were reported to the coroner’s office and Tuesday more remains, including a skull,” says Adam Mayberry from the City of Sparks.
State Lawmakers designated the park as an historical cemetery and it is clearly marked. The problem is because the site was for indigent patients there are no markers and no one knows where all the bodies are buried.
“They may not have identities but that's no reason for them to be put in a bag and placed on a corner,” says Tandy Gach, who lives in the area.
But that's exactly what happened yesterday when a resident found this bag of bones on the corner of 21st and Hymer and contacted Sparks Police.
“They were told to put them in a bag by the coroner's office and seal the bag, and I'm not exactly sure if they were taking them to the coroner's office of the coroner's office should collect them, but evidently the bag wasn't secure. I think that's an anomaly
Maberry says he's sure yesterday's incident underscores what construction workers need to do in this area for the next couple of months. Continue with the roadwork, but be vigilant and respectful of human bones should they be uncovered.
Sparks Police were called in, but because of the history of the area did not believe there was any foul play.
The case has been turned over the coroner’s office.
