Garage sale season is in full swing, as all this warm weather has people itching to start their spring cleaning. With a recession still looming, this season, some die-hard sale shoppers say they may have some competition.
Regular garage sale finders say there are two types of shoppers--those who see a sign on the side of the road, and stop by on a whim, and those who seek sales out intentionally.
"Craigs list, the newspaper, emails. Some of us will call each other and say I was just at a really good sale," said Alice Hescox of Silver Knolls.
Many say the best sales are in the wealthiest neighborhoods in town, like a Caughlin Ranch sale that drew a huge crowd on Friday.
"I'm surprised because I've never done this before. I didn't know people would be waiting in my garage when I opened it. That surprised me," said Sherry Sibayan.
"I like to get a bargain. Furniture that's cheaper and maybe an antique, a good find," added regular shopper, Sue Corrado.
While some sale holders, like Sherry Sibayan, are hoping to downsize their belongings, many are also it in it for the money. For some shoppers, it's a habit they can't seem to quit.
Alice Hescox says about 99 percent of what she's selling, she previously bought at a garage sale. Like an antique rug beater that she paid $1.00 for, and now she's upgraded to $5.00.
"A good garage sale is someone who is willing to bargain and get rid of her stuff," said Corrado.
The regulars say, they don't blame the recession. Garage sales are always in style. But the chances of getting a good deal on something has increased.
"Some of it's a lot nicer, but a lot of people are just throwing stuff out there because they need the money," said Hescox.
And in these simpler times, others are just hoping for a simpler life.
"If I haven't used it in the last ten years, I want to get rid of it," said Sibayan.
