Veterans Memorial Changes Hands
Reno
It's meant to honor our local soldiers, who lost their lives in Iraq and Afghanistan. But there have been concerns over inaccuracies and the quality of repairs on the "War on Terror" memorial in downtown Reno. That's why, today, the city decided to take it over.

RENO, NV - The memorial has been maintained privately, but today the city council voted to take responsibility for it with the help of the parks department and community support.

“Actually, Terri Russell from KOLO News came and asked us about some the memorials there and how some of the names had been misspelled, and repaired and who is in charge of it, and brought it up to some of us. We weren't sure so we told her we would put it on the agenda and see if we can resolve some of those issues,” said Reno City Councilman Dave Aiazzi.

During the city council meeting Aiazzi pointed out that the monument is already on city owned property.

“Frankly the city of Reno gets the black eye no matter who is in charge of it, if it is not done properly,” said Aiazzi.

To which Mayor Bob Cashell quickly responded.

“Well, you can make that real short and sweet. We are in charge we should do it and maintain it and keep it up,” said the mayor.

The vote was unanimous. Now the real work begins. Raising money and getting more veterans and residents involved in the second phase of this undertaking. The city is asking for your help to support not only the “War on Terror” Memorial, but also Powning Park, as well as next year’s Veterans Day Parade. “We owe a responsibility to our Veterans to make sure that it’s done properly,” said Aiazzi.
