Elko Imposes City Hiring Freeze
Elko is imposing a hiring freeze, but City Manager Curtis Calder says that if tax revenues continue to drop the city could still face a $200,000 budget shortfall.

ELKO, Nev. (AP) - Elko is imposing a hiring freeze, but City Manager Curtis Calder says that if tax revenues continue to drop the city could still face a $200,000 budget shortfall.
The City Council on Tuesday approved keeping currently unfilled positions vacant. It made an exception for a police records technician position that officials say will be filled.
Calder says sales tax revenue is down about 10 percent for the first two months of the fiscal year, and says the northeastern Nevada city would look next to cut services and supplies.
Police will be most affected by the freeze, because the department has the most vacancies.
Police Chief Don Zumwalt says there are three open patrol positions.
Elko County instituted a hiring freeze in January.
