A husband and father of two young children is recovering after being shot twice by a masked robber. It happened about 9:00 pm at the Sierra Discount Market on Highway 95-A in Fernley.
Surveillance video shows a man wearing a bandana, barging into the Sierra Discount Market, and demanding cash. In the video you can see the 36-year-old store owner, Sam Singh in the corner. After an attempt to open the register, the robber threatened Singh before running toward the back door. But it's locked, and the robber panics. Sam Singh is shot twice but he throws a liquor bottle as the masked man runs out the door.
"Has anything like this ever happened to you? No never."
Singh spoke to KOLO 8 News Now Tuesday afternoon, as he laid motionless in his hospital bed, recovering from surgery. Singh says he was shot twice, once in his right shoulder, and once in his left forearm. He says during the robbery, he saw his life flash before his eyes.
"I am very lucky. If he shot me in the head or something, I wouldn't be talking to you."
And Singh's family say he is extremely lucky to be alive. Blood stains still mark some displays at the Sierra Discount Market, and bullet holes grace a wall and a ceiling. Three shots were fired, but only two hit Singh. His regular customers and friends wished for his quick recovery, and shuddered to think about what could have happened.
"Sam, just be okay. Come home to your family and your store."
Investigators remained on scene late into the day, searching for evidence to help lead them to the man who nearly killed the Fernley store owner. Store customers say it was a strange scene for the sleepy town, robberies and shootings aren't something they see everyday.
"Well not very often in Fernley."
Sing also says there was less than $100 in the cash register.
Police are asking for the public's help in finding the suspect. At the time of Monday night's robbery he was wearing black baggy pants, a grey sweatshirt and a blue bandana over his face. He's described as 5'10' and heavy set. If you have any information about the crime, you can call the Lyon County Sheriff's Office at 577-5023.
