Well it looks like it does do something if it helps you avoid touching some things. Also, maybe the psychological factor of not touching things is important to some people even if the reality is only a minimal amount of germ aversion is accomplished.

Well for one swine flu is an airborne virus, so you can still get it even without touching anything all day long.
