MINDEN, Nev. (AP) - Douglas County's Democratic Party chairman has resigned following his guilty plea to hitting his teenage son.

The Record-Courier says Paul Belt announced his resignation Friday in a letter to the newspaper.

Belt was accused of punching his 15-year-old son several times on Oct. 22 when he learned his son was no longer on the boys' junior varsity soccer team.

In his letter, Belt said he wasn't angry with his son for being dismissed from the team, but was frustrated over a "series of incidents" with coaches.

Witness reported seeing Belt punch and kick his son. Coaches intervened when Belt reportedly threw the boy on the hood of a car.

Belt pleaded guilty to battery Wednesday and was given a one-year suspended jail sentence and ordered to attend counseling.
