JUNGO FLAT, NV - Plans to transport Bay Area garbage to a desert site west of Winnemucca are going to have to pass federal environmental studies first.
Funding for a study by the US Geological Survey of the site in Jungo Flat was included in a bill signed by the President October 30th.
Recology, which holds the contract for waste disposal for a number of Bay Area communities, is proposing to transport as much as 4,000 tons of waste five days a week to the site just west of Winnemucca.
The project has become the target of considerable opposition by residents in the past few months
The USGS study was introduced as an amendment to an interior department bill by Senator Harry Reid, who calls the plan to dump California trash in Nevada, a “threat to the state’s sovereignty.”
