The long lines and arm bands don’t look like they are going away any time soon. Or are they? Some local pediatricians' offices say they received a portion of their swine flu vaccines within the last 24 hours.
8 year old Richard Arredondo is waiting patiently for this swine flu vaccine. But it’s not what he expected. Instead of a shot in the arm, Flumist was shot through his nose. It still wasn’t painless in his opinion.
“I thought it hurt.” said Richard.
Richard's doctor, pediatrician Kevin Windisch, says his office just received the vaccine today. It came in two forms, the mist and the shot but its not as much as they requested. Already Dr. Windisch says they've got a system in place.
“I have to triage and decide who, you know, I've got 100 doses roughly for 500 high risk patients and 100 doses for over 1800 patients. So I'm reserving that for my children with respiratory disease, my preemies, my kids who are at high risk of having a bad outcome and who I cannot give Flumist,” said Dr. Windisch.
Dr. Windisch says he expects to go through the swine flu vaccine in no time. And as more and more pediatricians get a least a portion of their orders he believes waiting in line at the health department may be less necessary and if you think about it he says less healthy.
“Whenever you have a large congregation of people contagious diseases are passed and our asthmatic patients do poorly with that. So they are better off being seen in our office where they can be whisked in and whisked out instead of receiving armbands,” said Dr. Windisch.
State Health officials say there are hundreds of providers across the state, all will eventually have the swine flu vaccine. Of the nearly 270,000 vials sent to Nevada, the C-D-C has sent the state more than half.
Within the next week, local C-V-S pharmacies, Costco, Walgreens could have more supplies in as well.
Dr. Windisch's concern, will the total number of shipments make it before the swine flu season ends?
If you have to choose between waiting in line at the health department, or, going to your family physicians for the swine flu vaccine, there may be one determining factor. The health department won't charge you for the vaccine. You'll most likely be charged 20-dollars for an administration fee at a private practice.
