RENO, NV - One of our area's most well-known anti-government protesters, was found guilty Thursday morning on stalking and harassment charges.
71-year old Guy Felton of Sun Valley was sentenced to 48-hours of community service, plus a suspended six-month jail sentence for sending threatening letters and emails to state and local leaders.
Judge Barbara Finley ordered Felton to stay away from Washoe County commission meetings for at least a year. He is also forbidden from having any contact with County Commissioner David Humke, who Felton openly threatened earlier this year.
Felton admitted to sending letters to seven other state and local leaders--including governor Jim Gibbons, threatening to hold officials hostage, kill them, and even hurt their families. While Felton says the threats were empty, prosecutor Roy Stralla says he wasn't so sure.
"It's hard to tell if someone is dangerous or not, but the specificity of his threats suggest he could be a dangerous person. Also, he is quite ill and sometimes people who are ill don't have anything to lose and that makes people more concerned that they will carry out their threats," said Stralla, a deputy district attorney for Washoe County.
Felton, who is living with cancer--represented himself in court Thursday. He plans to work with senior citizens to fulfill his community service obligations. Judge Finley told him he should use his intelligence and outspoken personality in a more constructive way.
Commissioner David Humke chose not to comment on the case, saying it would only fuel the fire. Our calls to Guy Felton himself were not immediately returned.

There is a significant difference between being against corruption and stupidity in government ~ and being against government in general. KOLO has mischaracterized me as the latter, not as the former. KOLO's reporting of my trial ignored a number of key points. One biggie is that I was denied competent assistance of honest counsel, this pursuant to the Sixth Amendment to the Constitution of the United States. A so-called deputy public defender assigned to my case performed as an agent of the prosecution; he did not do all he could and should have done to protect my interests. For one thing, he refused to acknowledge that my motivation for sending protest emails to Jim Gibbons, etcetera, was the fact that David Humke clearly violated my right to free speech during the Washoe Commission meeting of March 24, this year; this is documented on video. The judge denied my due process right to an honest lawyer by declaring that my concerns with my DPD were only my opinion! Kangaroo court!!!
THE WHOLE STORY? Most Patriotic citizens can't wait to hear what this misdemean-iator has to say. The court said: Felton should use his intelligence and outspoken personality in a more constructive way. It would seem that defending the Constitution, fighting gvmt crime, etc, etc is pretty darn constructive. Everybody knows how Sam hates to take sides... but I saw Felton wrongfully removed from that gvmt meeting. And wrongful removal of a citizen from a gvmt meeting is (supposed to be dealt with as) a misdemeanor on the part of the bureaucrat ordering the wrongful removal. It says so right there in the Nevada Open Meeting Law. Yup! PS It is a very good thing that this good man is not in jail.
