RENO, Nev. (AP) - Reno police want to close more than a dozen bars for two hours at night to cut down on rowdy behavior and allow nearby residents to catch some sleep.

Police Chief Michael Poehlman said he wants the 15 bars closed
permanently from 4 a.m. to 6 a.m. He said his officers respond six times more to downtown bars than any other businesses with liquor licenses, and the noise disturbs residents.

The bars can stay open all night under current city ordinances.

"For goodness sake, people are living next to and above these places," Poehlman said. "That's who is calling. It's terrible when you can't sleep."

Tom Cladianos, owner of the West Second Street Bar, said inebriated minors and people doing drugs cause most of the trouble, and police should focus on them instead.

He noted casinos don't have to close at certain times. "How can they tell some businesses to close but not the casinos?" Cladianos asked. "There is a legal issue."

Marilyn Johnson, a downtown resident, said she hears noise late at night from patrons leaving two nearby bars. "I sleep with earplugs. They stay out until five or six in the morning."

City Council members took no immediate action, but agreed Wednesday to form a committee to find solutions. Mayor Bob Cashell said he wants to close the bars at 2 a.m.

People go to the downtown Reno area to participate in 24 hour adult oriented entertainment activities, that is the nature of the area's economic purpose. If legislators and government employees begin to eliminate attractions to the area and encourage increased regulations they will further damage the primary driver to the economic engine of Reno.

What difference is 2 hours? Can a person get enough sleep in 2 hours? And for the know it alls who say everyone has a choice where to live. NOT! I know from experience. Before I got my present job I had to live where I could afford the rent. This was DOWNTOWN because the rent was low enough. Before you badmouth people it pays to know their circumstances. I live far from there now but can remember the helplessnes of not having enough money to get out. Many people are in a vicious cycle. By the time they pay their rent they don't have enough left to pay deposits and first and last mont's rent for another place to live. So, all you know it all jerks, as far as I'm comcerned you can open mouth and insert foot! Your mouths are certainly larger than your brains.

Some good points by Mel, Fred & Sean. Sie is obviously one of the complainers causing the problems by calling the poolice because its too loud. You CANNOT move downtown Reno and expect it to be quiet at night. The burden on the Police department is not created by noisy patrons, its created by complainers who choose to live in a noisy neighborhood. Why would the police even respond to a complaint of noise dowtown west 2'nd street? DOWTOWN is 24 hrs! If you want piece and quiet at 2 am... then move a few blocks out... then you can call the police.
