RENO, NV - Two men are dead, and another wounded, after a mysterious double murder that has an entire neighborhood questioning their safety.
Police say it happened just after 7:30 Wednesday morning, at a home on Winston Drive. They say 72-year-old Clarence Johson was shot and killed there, after a gunfight between him and two men in their late 20's. Police do not believe the three men were strangers.
Police say it started with an argument inside the home, then multiple gunshots, and Johnson dead in his driveway. A witness told police he saw the two men speed away in the home owner's truck. Police say after crashing the black Tacoma, the men ended up at their apartment complex on Sutro Street where one of them bled to death. The other suspect was taken to a hospital, leaving a mystery for police to unfold.
"We haven't had any issues here in a long time. They've cleaned up this neighborhood. It's one of those areas we don't go to all the time so to have it happen here is I think a shock to residents," said Lieutenant Mike Whan with the Reno Police Department.
A neighbor who heard the early morning gunshots says he was disappointed that his security cameras didn't record the crime. In this area, he says you can never be too safe.
"We've been here six months. My house got broken into three days after we moved in. Two weeks ago, my car got stolen," said Robert Rodgers.
Now a murder has others questioning the safety of the area. Police believe the two suspects knew the 72-year-old man who died, but they're still trying to figure out who shot who, and why. Investigators say the man's wife is being cooperative.
"I've lived here a month and a half. Coming in, I knew it was a bad section of town, maybe per se, in some people's opinion, but it's been fairly quiet," said another neighbor, Robert Miller.
Police did obtain a search warrant by mid-day. Wednesday afternoon, forensics investigators and detectives were on scene, processing the inside of the home. The next step is for the coroner to conduct an autopsy to find out how the two men died.
Police say this case is extremely suspicious, especially because of the age difference between the three men. Also, they say the two younger men parked their car around the corner before approaching this home, and the one only survivor has changed his story several times.
Police are asking for help from the community. They say if you saw anything at the crime scene, or if you know anything about the three men involved in the crime, you should call Secret Witness at 322-4900.
