INCLINE VILLAGE, Nev. (AP) - A woman who thinks her pet dog was killed by coyotes at north Lake Tahoe has launched a petition to try to prompt local officials to crack down on what she says is a growing threat from the animals.
Jeannette Whitmore's Yorkie named "Piper" slipped out of her home near Incline Village Golf Course about 6:30 p.m. a week ago and hasn't been seen since. She says the coyotes were out in full force that night and because of the timing, she is pretty sure they got the dog.
Her petition asks "Incline Village to work with golf courses and wildlife experts to take action to reduce the threat of coyote population immediately."

One more point, coyotes have never been in Kentucky until recent decades. They were as foreign as giraffes when I was a kid. This is NOT their natural territory, but they have been moving east of the Mississippi for the last forty years. We never worried about walking dogs or children playing unattended. They are invading OUR territory.
I have been walking two 80 pound gun dogs at night for 12 years in a suburb, and was stalked by a coyote this month who was not remotely afraid of me but very interested in my dogs. I yelled at it and tried to shoo it away, but it wouldn't go and when I backed up a few steps it moved quickly toward us. I finally stomped forward a couple of steps, yelling (terrified) and it snarled and circled around and blithely trotted into some shadows further down the street. I called my husband to pick us up. So much for them being afraid of people. Read what's going on!!!
We live in a beautiful area, and part of the attraction is the wildllife. While coyotes can be an issue for small pets, owners should recognize the dangers and act accordingly. People should not interfere with mother nature's balance unless a particular individual animal becomes a threat. If I had more coyotes again these days, I'd have about two dozen fewer rabbits!
