Getting Hitched for Less
Reno
June is one of the most popular months to tie the knot. But this year vendors and wedding planners say brides-to-be are looking for ways to save instead of splurge on their special day.

It can be pricey anytime of the year depending upon how you want to get married. Here in Reno an couple on average spends between about $17,000 to-$28,000 for a wedding. But those numbers may be changing.

Kim Redmon is trying on the store model of a wedding dress she'll be wearing in August. She says she and her fiance started planning for the wedding in August. And when the estimates came in, they had to make some cuts.

“We've had to cut our guest list pretty significantly. Its just the amount per head was too much,” says Kim.

Redmon says there were places she refused to cut back on like the location and photographer.

Cake makers say they aren't always at the top of the list of priorities for brides and they too are seeing a change in orders.

“Brides are buying smaller cakes, for their cake cutting, their ceremonial cake cutting, they still want a cake for that. But then they may serve half of that to the guests and the other half of the guests will get sheet cake or cupcakes,” says Maria Hess of Josef’s Vienna Bakery.

Marisa says brides can save about 30-to-40% when they downsize. She says she's seen brides-to-be take pictures of her creations, and then a relative tries to recreate it. That's nothing new according to wedding planner Missy Green.

“Do I really have to spend $1,200 dollars for a wedding cake? No,” says Missy Green from Parties to Remember.

Green says she's seeing brides make cuts in flowers and concentrating more on the food. Open bars she says are a thing of the past. But what she hopes will never be lost in this down economy as far as weddings are concerned is the underlying reason for the event itself.

“It's a happy occassion, you are at an event with your family and your friends, people that you might not have seen for a long time. How much better can that get?” says Green.

While June may be the most popular month to get married, it doesn't mean you have to pay more. Experts recommend getting married on a Friday night, or even Saturday morning, any time before Saturday night. You could save at least 10-percent on meals and venues.

June is the most popular month to get married in part because of ancient tradition. June is named after Juno the roman goddess of marriage. She brought prosperity and happiness to all who wed in her month.

In our community we attempt to arrange concurrent weddings if possible and "split" many of the obvious items. We can also negotiate better prices on caterers and bands, etc. Of course we do all kinds of other sharing and splitting of expenses. I just started a blog about it. http://splitting-expenses.blogspot.com/
