The worldwide outbreak of swine flu has now hit home. Early this morning, epidemiologists confirmed the first case of the virus in Nevada.
A two-year-old girl is recovering from swine flu, while state and local health workers work frantically to keep the virus from spreading further. Her identity is not being disclosed, but we do know she was treated at Saint Mary's hospital on Sunday.
The state epidemiologist says the little girl was first diagnosed with Influenza A and then her culture was re-tested by the Center's for Disease Control. The second test showed a positive result for swine flu.
Governor Jim Gibbons and a handful of state health workers made the announcement we've all been fearing.
"The state of Nevada recognizes that we are vulnerable, but that every resource, every personnel the state has, is going to be available to assist Washoe County in case of any outbreak," said Gibbons.
Health officials say the little girl got sick last Friday. She had not traveled to Mexico, or any other community that's already seen signs of swine flu. Health officials say she most likely got it from another person in our community, and only now, with so much attention on swine flu is proper testing being conducted.
"It is very likely that cases have gone around in the U.S. and have not caused death or severe illness, and went undetected," said Dr. Mary Anderson, Washoe County Health Officer.
Officials with the department of Health and Human Services say only two drugs, Tamiflu and Relenza can treat the virus, and it can only be prescribed by a doctor.
"The state has 140,000 treatments in stock now. The state is receiving another 80,000 courses. So we'll have over 200,000. Our job is to deliver them to hospitals, pharmacies, doctor's offices. If they are needed, we will make them available," said Mike Willden, with Nevada's Department of Health and Human Services.
State leaders couldn't say how many of us in Washoe County are at risk. The two year-old only stayed in the hospital for a short time, but she also may also have exposed people at her daycare center, and another member of her family is already showing signs of the flu.
"We have been practicing this for years. We are prepared. We're executing our preparedness plans and we'll do everything we can to limit further transmission, but I will caution, there will likely be additional cases," said Dr. Randall Todd, Washoe County Epidemiologist.
The two-year-old is responding positively to the Tamiflu medicine, and is recovering at home tonight. The staff at Saint Mary's says there is no need for anyone to be concerned about contamination if they come to this hospital. Saint Mary's treats flu and other infections every single day, and they say the swine flu is no different.
Currently, there are 60 flu surveillance sites in our state, including hospitals and doctor's offices. They are all closely monitoring anyone who comes in with flu symptoms. The state health lab is also testing all flu samples for the swine flu virus.
Currently they're testing between 40 and 50 per day, and so far, only this one has come up positive. Three others Nevada cases were suspected this week, one in Las Vegas, and two in Carson City. All three of those have been ruled out.

This is all so crazy, when i heard it had hit Washoe county i started to worry cause i don't live to far away & i have 2 young children that seem to always get sick,im scared what should i do to protect them?
Doesn't the girl who owns Fundamentals and her daughter also own sierra cheerleading or something? Have any of those coaches or their family members been to mexico or are they or have they been sick lately? I hope the little girl recovers. It's a shame that people aren't warned about possible swine flu here in Nevada when in other cities like Corpus Christi or Tucson they announce possible cases too. It only makes sense.. when trying to stop a virus.. let people know where to stay away from. It's almost as if they want it to spread. Sad.
Do you think that at this point wearing mask and gloves could help slow down the process of infection, herre at Washoe county?
