RENO, NV - The simple facts of Jennifer Martin's disappearance are puzzling to say the least.
At about 3 o'clock the afternoon of June 28, 1987, the 11-year old left her home in a Lemmon Valley trailer park, walked to a 7-11 store barely a block away. She bought a few items, walked out the door....and simply, incredibly and tragically disappeared.
Little about this scene has changed in the past quarter century and little more is known about Jennifer Martin's fate.
Each of those years, her sister Colleen Martin has marked the anniversary, sometimes picking up a toy unicorn.
"We both loved unicorns," says Colleen. "So, it's just a little way of remembering her."
There have been darker moments in those anniversaries.
"I don't drink anymore so I stopped getting drunk on that anniversary, Colleen admits.
But she still keeps the vigil.
"I still have the same phone number and I live in the same place and I will never change my phone number until we have resolution because that's the phone number she knew."
You see she still clings to the faint hope that her sister who would be 36 today is still out there somewhere.
"I can't let go of that hope. I would feel like I was betraying her."
Like the families of other missing children, the sudden discovery of Jaycee Dugard, taken a few years after Jennifer, has given the Martin family new reason to cling to that hope.
But until answers come that hope is all they have.
Jennifer Martin's case is still assigned to a Washoe County Sheriff's detective and a Secret Witness reward of $5,000 still stands.
Their number is 322-4900. Callers may remain anonymous while collecting cash rewards.
