It's now believed nearly ten-thousand people perished in the earthquake that struck China. But a group of American university students is safe.

Carmelo Urza, director of the University Studies Abroad Consortium at UNR, says roughly 30 students from a variety of schools are accounted for. Urza says it's believed four students from UNR were in Chengdu when the quake hit - Chengdu is about 55 miles from the epicenter.

Urza says many of the American students returned to the U.S. when the semester ended, just days before the 7.9 magnitude quake.

He says the consortium is still moving forward with plans to send students to China this summer.
