SPANISH SPRINGS, NV - A 12-year-old boy is seriously hurt after an accident in Spanish Springs.

He was flown to a hospital with a severe head injury.

He had been riding his bike along Rockwell Boulevard around 6pm Sunday. Investigators and witnesses say he grabbed on to his mother's passing pickup, possibly without her realizing it until he fell. Earlier reports indicated the mother had been intentionally towing her son with her truck, but the investigation is revealing so far that's likely not what happened.

The boy was not wearing a helmet. He lost control, crashed and suffered what deputies say are serious but not life-threatening injuries.

The crash is still under investigation.

Deputies say he had just won second place in a BMX tournament. His trophy and helmet were in the back of the pickup.
