Sparks Recording Studio Gets Upgrade

SPARKS, NV - Tom Gordon has worked with a long list of famous musicians including Dr. Dre, Willie Nelson, Boyz II Men and Merle Haggard just to name a few. A Reno native, Gordon has worked in Northern Nevada for most of his career.

"There's some great nugget you can pull away from every client, big or small, and I've certainly pulled away either great stories, great knowledge, or great techniques from every act I've worked with," he says.

The Sparks recording studio he works at as head engineer has a rich history as well. It's where Lionel Ritchie and Diana Ross recorded their academy award nominated hit "Endless Love". Gordon says many artists like to record in the Reno area so they can escape the distractions of the big cities.

Imirage Sound Lab recently installed a new sound board, which has a story of its own. Before coming to Sparks it was used to mix sound for more than 100 movies, including Old School, The 40-Year Old Virgin, Starsky and Hutch and The Devil Wears Prada. It was purchased from another Reno native, Chris Fogel, who Gordon assisted in doing the sound for Ben Stiller's latest blockbuster, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty. Gordon says the new equipment gives them more versatility while maintaining quality sound when mixing tracks.

"We have the flexibility of a digital desk but it is always the sound of analog," he says.

Now Gordon works primarily with local musicians, like The Novelists, a band featured at the studio's open house this week. Due to the studio's iconic past, Gordon says it provides a lot of inspiration to artists on the rise.
