RENO, Nev. -- Soon, you won't have to drive two hours to get to your favorite clothing store. The empty building that once was border's bookstore will now reopen as Nordstrom Rack. A big chain store like this could mean for the Biggest Little City.
It's known for its discounts on trendy clothes and accessories.
"It's just a nice place to shop. You just feel good when you try on their clothing," said Carolyn Fletcher from Reno.
Up 70% off when you compare it to prices at a regular Nordstrom. What was worth driving hours over the pass before can now be found in the Biggest Little City.
"I miss it, I've been here for six years, so I've been nordstrom hungry since then," said Bo Scott from Reno.
However, the Seattle-based retail store promises to bring more than just affordable style to Reno. It's good news for surrounding businesses. For nearly three years, people have been anxiously waiting for anything to fill the empty space that was Border's, a hot spot for book lovers.
"That is exciting, especially to have any kind of businesses coming back to this area," said a Reno native.
Currently, in addition to the Outlets at Legends in Sparks, the new discount store may be just what this part of town needs.
"Some of the stores just aren't as upscale and it's really fun if you're going to a special thing like a wedding or something like that, to go to a store like Nordstrom and have your choices there," said Fletcher.
"I think it will be a nice change," Crystol Filler from Reno said. "It's not something that we normally have around here."
Nordstrom Rack won't be opening its doors until next spring.
RENO, NV (PRNewswire) - Seattle-based Nordstrom, Inc. has announced plans to open a Nordstrom Rack at Redfield Promenade in Reno. The store, about 31,000 square feet, is scheduled to open in spring of 2015.
According to a news release, Nordstrom Rack is the off-price retail division of Nordstrom, Inc., offering customers a wide selection of on-trend apparel, accessories and shoes at an everyday savings of 30-70 percent off regular prices. The Rack carries merchandise from Nordstrom stores and Nordstrom.com, as well as specially-purchased items from many of the top brands sold at Nordstrom. The Rack is designed to provide the ultimate treasure hunt to style-savvy customers.
The first Nordstrom Rack originally opened in Las Vegas in 2001 at Silverado Ranch Plaza and relocated to Stephanie Street in 2011. Nordstrom has also operated a full-line store at Fashion Show Mall in Las Vegas since 2002.
"We're thrilled to bring a Nordstrom Rack to the Reno community," said Geevy Thomas, president of Nordstrom Rack. "This central retail location at Redfield Promenade is a good fit for us and we look forward to offering customers access to fashion at great prices when we open our doors next year."
The new Nordstrom Rack will be located at Redfield Promenade, a 147,000-square-foot shopping center at Kietzke Lane and South Virginia Street. The new store will move into a former Borders Books and join anchor tenants such as Bed Bath & Beyond and Cost Plus World Market. In addition, the center has several food service-oriented uses including Claim Jumpers, Ijji Sushi and Costa Vida Fresh Mexican Grill.
"We are pleased to have Nordstrom Rack as a tenant at Redfield Promenade, which represents the retailer's twelfth location within our portfolio," said Conor Flynn, executive vice president and chief operating officer of Kimco. "The reconfiguration of the center to accommodate the new Nordstrom Rack store highlights the success of our redevelopment strategy in helping to attract best-in-class retailers to our centers and enhance the shopping experience for our customers."
