SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) - A Northern California woman who stuffed her newborn daughter in a trash bag and hid her under the bed has received a maximum term of 25 years to life in prison.
A Sacramento Superior Court judge told Courtney Addington on Friday that she ended the baby's life in a cruel and callous way.
Addington gave birth on Jan. 25 and, after hiding the newborn under her bed, asked her father to take her to the hospital. There, she denied giving birth.
The Sacramento Bee reports that Addington claimed she didn't know she was pregnant and believed the baby she had delivered was bloody, painful stool - the result of irritable bowel syndrome.
Prosecutors asserted she lied about her pregnancy by explaining her bloated belly was caused by the syndrome.
