Mother Charged With Leaving Baby, Tot in Hot Car

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Los Angeles County prosecutors have filed charges against an 18-year-old mother who allegedly left her 2-week-old daughter and 1-year-old son in a locked car to go dress shopping last weekend in the midst of California's heat wave.

The district attorney's office says Arely Aide Amaya of Los Angeles will be arraigned Tuesday afternoon on two counts of misdemeanor child abuse.

Sheriff's deputies responded Saturday to calls that the infant and little boy were in a locked car with windows partially rolled down. A district attorney's office statement says deputies were able to unlock the car and rescue the children.

Amaya was arrested when she returned to her car and the children were taken into protective custody.

If convicted, she faces up to two years in county jail.
