LEBEC, Calif. (AP) - A brush fire north of Los Angeles is threatening homes in a canyon near the Grapevine area of Interstate 5.
Kern County fire spokesman Corey Wilford says the blaze began on the side of the freeway Tuesday morning. It's running up brushy ridges, burning 350 acres and forcing evacuation of about 15 homes in an area of Lebec called Digier Canyon.
A southbound truck lane of the major north-south road is closed but traffic is light.
Meanwhile, two days of thunderstorms are helping crews tame a 9-day-old wildfire in the mountains above Palm Springs.
The fire that blackened 43 square miles of the San Jacinto Mountains is 85 percent contained and it's only smoldering.
At its peak, the fire burned seven homes and forced 6,000 people to evacuate.
