CIMA, Calif. (AP) - Veterans plan to resurrect a war memorial cross on a rocky outcropping in the Mojave Desert on Veteran's Day that was part of a 13-year legal battle over the separation of church and state.
Henry Sandoz will rededicate the cross Sunday on Sunrise Rock.
The ceremony follows a lawsuit by the American Civil Liberties Union that argued the cross was unconstitutional because it was in the Mojave National Preserve.
The Supreme Court intervened in 2010 and directed a court to consider a land swap.
The settlement transferred Sunrise Rock to veterans groups. In exchange, five acres of land owned by Sandoz was donated to the national park.
Sandoz has cared for the cross for decades as a promise to the dying veteran who erected it originally in 1934
