UPDATE: Forest officials have postponed this burn because of wind concerns.

-----------------------

RENO, Nev. (AP) - Forest Service officials have announced plans for a prescribed burn next week in the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest just west of Reno.

The intentional fires will be set in the Dog Valley area near Verdi about a mile from the Nevada-California line beginning on Monday, weather permitting.

Crews intend to burn about 28 acres of forest understory. The project may take a couple of days.

District fuels specialist Steve Howell says prescribed fire is an efficient way to remove woody debris and forest litter so as to reduce the risk of catastrophic wildfire.
