ADELANTO, Calif. (AP) - Authorities say two people have been airlifted to a hospital after their single-engine airplane crashed into a dry lake bed in the Mojave Desert.

San Bernardino County Fire Department spokeswoman Tracey Martinez says the accident at El Mirage Lake occurred shortly after 11 a.m. Monday.

Martinez says the two-seater plane sustained severe damage. It was not immediately clear where the plane took off from and where it was headed. The patients' conditions were not immediately known.

The dry lake bed is popular with private pilots and off-highway vehicle riders.

The crash is under investigation.
