TRUCKEE, CA - On Airport Road in Truckee you'll see Tahoe Bear Box Company advertise its product proudly.

Approved for use up in the area, owner Randy Stanaway says this is the time of year when sales pick up.

“The bears are done hibernating. They have their young little cubs and they are ready to get fat for the summer. It will get progressively worse until December when they go to bed,” says Stanaway.

New homes in the area already have animal resistant garbage boxes placed near their homes.

Too tough to get into, they discourage bears and other animals from coming into the neighborhood.

In older neighborhoods though, they are not required.

And some residents in the area have had their garbage strewn across the street by animals.

“More people that don't get it. They don't think that if they put their garbage pit the night before if they are in a prone area that has bear or animal problems if they find a food source they are coming back to it,” says Truckee Compliance Officer Kerry Taber.

A new town of Truckee ordinance hopes to change that by alerting non compliant residents they need to put their garbage out after five in the morning on pickup day, or install a so-called "bear box".

For those who are out of compliance three times, there is a one thousand dollar fine.

Taber says since the new ordinance, she's had to send out five letters to those who are not compliant, but with such hefty fines, that's all she's had to do.

The town of Truckee says it will waive fines at any point if the resident install an animal-resistant garbage can enclosure within 30 days.
