SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, CA - Three people are being treated in hospitals after their personal watercraft crashed on Lake Tahoe Monday morning.

Around 9:45AM, South Lake Tahoe police dispatchers received a 911 call reporting two personal watercraft had collided about one quarter mile north and west of Timbercove Beach on Lake Tahoe. The caller stated two adults and two children had been ejected from their watercraft. All had been wearing life jackets, and were rescued from the water by personnel from the Timbercove Marina. The victims were returned back to the Timbercove pier in two boats.

An investigation by SLTPD boat officers revealed the personal watercraft had been rented at the Timbercove Marina by the parents of a 7-year-old girl and 5-year-old boy, visiting South Lake Tahoe from San Jose, California. The father, 45-year-old Sufian Kazmi, and the mother, Subia Kazmi each took one of their children as a passenger seated behind them. Neither parent had any experience operating a personal watercraft. After about 30 minutes, the mother’s craft crossed in front of the father’s craft, both traveling about 30 miles per hour. The front of the father’s craft struck the mother’s craft broadside.

The father is not seriously hurt. The young boy was taken to Barton Memorial Hospital with his mother, as both sustained moderate head and leg injuries. The little girl sustained severe injuries to her leg and foot. She was flown to Reno. According to police, preliminary information indicates none of the injuries is life-threatening.

Rescue medic personnel had to cut some of the victim’s clothing away. SLTPD boat officers bought Mrs. Kazmi some replacement clothing from a local store, and would like to recognize Margarite Aguirre, of the local Hill’s Center Laundromat of South Lake Tahoe, who dried the victim’s remaining clothing for them so they could be prepared for their release from Barton Hospital.

The investigation is continuing. No citations have been issued.
