OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - Police say three men have been detained in connection with the armed robbery of several casual carpool riders in Oakland.
The three were taken into custody late Monday morning after police spotted a car matching the description of the suspects' vehicle in West Oakland just hours after the robberies took place on Claremont Avenue near Highway 24 in the city's upscale Rockridge neighborhood.
Their names have not been released.
Police say while some of the carpoolers were able to run, others were robbed at gunpoint of money, wallets, purses, cell phones and backpacks as the suspects ran to a nearby car and sped away.
Dan Kalb, the city councilman who represents the area, calls the robberies "brazen" and has asked police to station officers near the casual carpool area.
The incident remains under investigation.
