SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) - Officials say thousands of people showed up and waited in lines stretching for ten blocks to get a free Thanksgiving turkey and canned food in Sacramento on Monday.

Kelly Siefkin, a food bank spokeswoman told the Sacramento Bee that the food bank and Family Services in Oak Park had a little more than 6,300 turkeys, donated by individuals, businesses and government agencies, to give away.

Siefkin says food bank volunteers began handing out the free turkeys around 8 a.m., and worked until all the turkeys were given away.

This year's total of 6,309 free turkeys was slightly more than last year's 6,023, but Siefkin says last year organizers also gave away 2,000 hams that had been donated by Wells Fargo.
