OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge officials are looking at a temporary fix for cracked seismic safety bolts that may allow the new eastern span to open as scheduled on Labor Day.

But they said at a meeting on Wednesday that more work is needed to vet the proposed temporary fix.

Toll Bridge Oversight Committee members said work on the permanent repair is still scheduled to be finished by Dec. 10.

Steven Heminger, an oversight committee member, said engineers are looking at a so-called "shimming" idea - installing steel plates into the area of the broken bolts to help prevent movement during an earthquake. The temporary fix would be in place while long-term repairs are occurring.

The 32 seismic safety bolts that secure earthquake shock absorbers to the bridge's deck became brittle and cracked after they were tightened in March.
