OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - A 17-year-old high school student has been ordered to stand trial for the slaying of a paramedic in Oakland.
The Oakland Tribune reports Christian Burton will be tried for the April murder of 34-year-old Quinn Boyer. Burton, who has been charged as an adult, has pleaded not guilty.
Prosecutors say Burton shot Boyer at point-blank range during an attempted carjacking while Boyer was sitting in his parked car. Burton and five other teens had allegedly driven up to Boyer, who was off-duty, in a stolen car.
Boyer died two days later at a hospital.
Police Sgt. Randy Brandwood testified during a preliminary hearing that Burton said he shot Boyer but added it was an accident that happened when Burton and another teen tried to rob the paramedic of his iPhone.
