SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, CA - Part of US 50 was closed for several hours because of suspicious cookware Sunday night.

Around 7PM, the South Lake Tahoe 911 Center received a report of an abandoned pressure cooker on the ground at the Lakeview Commons, at Lakeview Avenie and US 50. The call came in just before the end of the Lake of the Sky Paddle Board Event, which took place at the Lakeview Commons.

The area was cleared immediately and the South Lake Tahoe Police Department had to divert traffic on 50 around Lakeview Commons until the package could be examined. The Tahoe Douglas Bomb Squad attempted to destroy the cooker with a bomb robot, but that failed. So a member of the squad, wearing protective gear, walked in and destroyed the device with a P.A.N. Disrupter, which is a type of water cannon.

Once it was determined the device was no longer a threat, traffic was no longer diverted. Traffic was re-routed for about 2 hours.

Officers later determined the device was an industrial-sized electronic rice cooker which contained food.
