SANTA ANA, Calif. (AP) - Santa Ana police shot and wounded a suspect officers believed was reaching for a weapon following a foot chase.
Cpl. Anthony Bertagna says police received a call early Sunday of unknown trouble involving a man and a woman on a residential stretch of East Washington Avenue.
When officers arrived the man ran off, leading them on a chase through several yards. Bertagna says officers opened fire when the man turned to face them and reached for his waistband. The suspect hopped a fence and was taken into custody a short time later.
The man, whose name was not released, was hospitalized in serious condition with a gunshot wound to his torso.
Bertagna says investigators are looking for two people who were in the area at the time of the shooting, and may have taken the suspect's weapon.
