LAS VEGAS (AP) - Authorities are identifying a 29-year-old California man accused of crashing a pickup truck he was trying to steal, killing an off-duty California Highway Patrol officer and badly injuring another man who were trying to stop him.
Police and jail records show that James Robert Montgomery of Tustin, Calif., is held on murder, kidnapping, auto theft and other charges in the weekend death of 33-year-old Jesus Manual Magdaleno Jr. and injury of 31-year-old Felix Brandon Cruz.
Magdaleno was from Visalia, Calif.
He died of when he was thrown from the bed of the pickup in the crash about 11 a.m. Sunday.
Cruz has a critical head injury.
Police say Magdaleno and Cruz were loading luggage at the Flamingo hotel-casino when Montgomery jumped into the driver's seat and sped away.
