FAIRFIELD, Calif. (AP) - Police in Northern California say officers found a man suspected of shooting multiple rounds in his neighborhood dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound after a roughly eight-hour standoff.

The Fairfield police SWAT team entered the suspect's home at 8:39 p.m. Monday. They killed an aggressive dog after a stun gun failed to subdue it and then found the man dead upstairs.

He has not been identified.

The incident began in the afternoon after several people called to report as many as 50 shots fired in the area. Fairfield police say two short bursts of gunfire came from inside the home as officers approached, prompting them to evacuate neighbors.

During the ensuing standoff, police say officers tried unsuccessfully to contact anyone inside.

Nobody was hurt in the gunfire from the house, though police say some homes and vehicles in the area were struck.
