Senators Call for End of Drug Sales on Craigslist

RENO, NV - Prescription drugs for sale to the highest bidder. That's what senators from California and Nevada are teaming up to put an end to. For years, Craigslist has allowed the practice to go on, even though it's illegal.

Senator Segerblom of Las Vegas and Senator Lieu of Redondo Beach, California both sent letters to Craigslist last week asking that they stop allowing this practice because it has already killed too many people.

The ads are abundant. A quick Craigslist search reveals if you want to get high all you have to do is know what you're looking for. Oxycontin, Adderal, Vicodin, and Xanex all a click away.

"There are 15,000 overdoses of these drugs in the United States, I mean deaths from overdoses. There are hundreds of thousands of actual overdoses," said Senator Segerblom, (D) Las Vegas.

Senator Tick Segerblom wants these ads removed and banned.

"I would hope that first of all they would take them off of Craigslist, that's one less place where you can get them," said Segerblom.

It's already illegal to sell prescription drugs or even consume drugs that were intended for someone else, but the adds still appear.

"I think it's a great idea. Think of it this way; you can be 16 years old, you could be 66 years old," said Kevin Quint of Join Together Northern Nevada. He has seen first-hand the problems online drug sales can create.

"There is no quality control. There is no screening. There is no nothing so you can just go get a whole boatload of Oxycontin," said Quint

Not only are these drugs dangerous; they are highly addictive. Both Quint and Segerblom worry their availability could foster more addicts.

"If people need these addictive drugs, then in our opinion they should be going into a treatment program as opposed to getting them on the internet," said Segerblom

"They need to be available through doctors and pharmacies and all the legal avenues," said Quint.

Senator Segerblom said Monday Craigslist has responded to his request and they plan on setting up a meeting to discuss the issue.
