LOS ANGELES (AP) - The utility that runs the troubled San Onofre (oh-NOH'-fray) nuclear power plant in California is pushing back against allegations that the company took engineering shortcuts that compromised safety.
The plant between San Diego and Los Angeles has been shut down for more than a year after unusual damage was found in steam generator tubes that carry radioactive water.
On Wednesday, Sen. Barbara Boxer pressed federal regulators to open a probe after uncovering what she called new information showing Edison was aware of design problems in the generators before the equipment was installed.
Southern California Edison says in a statement Thursday the senator's suggestions are "not accurate."
The company says it would never install equipment that it believed would not perform safely.
