SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. (AP) - A California jury has convicted a man for the shotgun killing of his mother.
A San Luis Obispo County jury on Tuesday found 36-year-old Christopher John Shumey guilty of second-degree murder for the September 2011 death of 65-year-old Karen Shumey, a popular eighth-grade teacher at Vandenberg Middle School.
The jury rejected a first-degree murder conviction.
Shumey's mother was shot twice with shotgun blasts on an apartment balcony after a quarrel with her son.
Shumey had pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity, so a second phase now begins in the trial.
The jury must decide whether Shumey was sane at the time of the killing. If the jury decides he was insane, he will be sent to a state mental hospital.
