SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - A San Francisco Catholic high school has issued a public apology to a female student and her family for refusing to include a portrait of the student wearing a tuxedo in its yearbook.

John F. Scudder Jr. and Gary Cannon, the president and principal of Sacred Heart Cathedral Preparatory, said in a joint statement published on the school's website Monday that they had not communicated their yearbook portrait policy adequately to senior Jessica Urbina and her parents. They also said that conforming to the policy, which had mandated that boys wear tuxedos and girls wear black dresses in their yearbook photos, was wrong in this case.

Jessica's family has requested that the yearbook not be reprinted for her sake because they don't want the other students to have to wait to receive their copies.
