SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO, Calif. (AP) - A city councilman in San Juan Capistrano suggests arming teachers, staff and parents to protect children in the wake of the deadly Connecticut school shooting.

The Orange County Register says Councilman Derek Reeve sent a letter Wednesday to officials of the Capistrano Unified School District in the aftermath of the Connecticut school massacre.

Reeve, who has two school-age sons, says the district should permit teachers and others who own guns and are trained to use them to take the weapons to school. As an alternative, he suggests hiring armed security guards.

Capistrano school Superintendent Joseph Farley says the district won't consider any proposal to have staff members carry guns.
