SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — The San Francisco region's 415 telephone area code is nearly full because of the cellphone surge and a 628 area code overlay is coming in 2015.
The 415 area code has covered the entire San Francisco Bay area for more than a half century.
The California Public Utilities Commission says there aren't enough number combinations left and a new three-digit area code is necessary.
The San Francisco Chronicle says the 626 area code will be given to residents and businesses that get a new number sometime in 2015.
People who already have a 415 number probably won't have to change.
Public hearings on the plan begin next year.
