SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - San Francisco has tentatively agreed to pay $175,000 to a city firefighter who claimed superiors subjected him and two other black rookies to racial discrimination.

The San Francisco Chronicle reports (http://bit.ly/16a5fki ) that the San Francisco Fire Commission approved the payment to settle a lawsuit brought by 48-year-old Larry Jacobs. City supervisors still must accept the settlement.

Jacobs alleged in his suit that after he injured his shoulder lifting a ladder he was assigned to menial tasks such as scrubbing floors with a toothbrush and weeding.

He claimed he was called "house boy" and ordered him not to associate or eat with other trainees.

Some veteran firefighters verified his account and said it was part of a campaign to get Jacobs and the two others to drop out of the 2005 training class.
