SAN DIEGO (AP) - Service on a 22-mile rail system in northern San Diego County has been suspended so mechanics can replace worn brake rotors on its 12 trains.

The North County Transit District announced Friday that it could take up to four months to fix the Sprinter's troubled brake system.

State inspectors discovered an issue with the brake rotors on Feb. 28. Two days later, an employee who knew about the problem but didn't tell his superiors resigned.

U-T San Diego reports the decision to temporarily halt service forced the district to cancel Saturday's celebration of the rail line's 5th anniversary.

The state's rail regulator ordered the district on Thursday to replace the faulty rotors immediately.
