SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) - A gang member convicted of murdering a man he mistook for a rival has been sentenced to 94 years to life in prison.
The Sacramento Bee reports 23-year-old Elijah Dupree Goethe was sentenced Friday for killing 20-year-old Joseph Washington nearly five years ago.
During trial, prosecutors said Goethe and accomplice fired gunshots at the victim and his friend because they were looking to retaliate for being fired upon at a convenience store several hours earlier.
Authorities said the victims had nothing to do with the shooting at the convenience store.
Washington's friend was wounded by a bullet to the face.
Goethe's accomplice was never charged in the case due to a lack of evidence. He is serving a six-year prison term after being convicted in an unrelated shooting.
