SFJazz Center Opens, Bringing Swing To West Coast

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - San Francisco's sleek new jazz concert hall has opened with an inaugural celebration hosted by Bill Cosby.

The specially designed 700-seat concert hall in the city's arts district was lit up in a light rain for its opening night Wednesday.

The gala featured performances from jazz luminaries including McCoy Tyner, Chick Corea and Esperanza Spalding, and an audience that included musician Tom Waits, actor Danny Glover and former Secretary of State George Schultz.

The center is being billed as the first freestanding building in the West built for jazz performance and education.

Some $60 million was raised over a decade to build the center.
