SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - San Francisco's District Attorney's Office says it has been awarded a $1 million federal grant to help reduce crime in one of the city's most violent neighborhoods.
District Attorney George Gascón announced Monday his office will use the Department of Justice grant as part of a "Safer Together Consortium" to address those victimized and affected by crime in the Bayview Hunters Point neighborhood.
Gascon and Supervisor Malia Cohen say they will partner with agencies to use an out of the box approach as the grant will support research, counseling and intervention.
According to the San Francisco Police and the FBI, violent crimes are nearly three times higher in the Bayview than elsewhere in the city. The neighborhood also has the city's highest rate of alcohol and drug abuse.
San Francisco is one of 10 cities nationwide to receive the grant.
