SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Residents are being allowed back onto and off a San Francisco island after police say a suspect in a standoff with officers there shot and killed himself.
The unidentified man was pronounced dead around 5 a.m. Tuesday. Police Sgt. Michael Andraychak says the incident began around 11 p.m., when officers received a report of a man armed with a gun in a stolen sedan in San Francisco's Lower Nob Hill neighborhood.
During an ensuing chase, the man allegedly fired at least one shot, as he crossed the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge and went onto Treasure Island.
Andraychak says the suspect ran from the vehicle and threatened to kill himself. Negotiators were called in to speak to him before he shot and killed himself.
Residents and traffic were not allowed to get onto or leave the island while the incident unfolded.
