Daytime view of the Bay Bridge and San Francisco seen from Yerba Buena Island
VALLEJO, Calif. (AP) - A report says a Chinese company supplied hundreds of thousands of bolts of the wrong size for the seismic retrofitting of a San Francisco Bay Area bridge.
The California Senate report released on Wednesday says the 250,000 incorrectly-sized bolts were made by Shanghai Zhenhua Heavy Industry Co. Ltd, for a retrofit of the Carquinez Bridge to Vallejo.
The bolts for the Carquinez Bridge were rejected and remade, but the report characterizes the problem as a near disaster.
State transportation officials did not immediately respond to a request for comment. An after-hours call to Shanghai Zhenhua was not answered.
The report mainly addresses concerns with another structure involving the company - the new San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge. An engineer found cracks in welds Shanghau Zenhua made for the new Bay Bridge span.
