SEQUOIA NATIONAL PARK, Calif. (AP) - Authorities say remains found on California's Mount Whitney are those of a missing hiker from New Jersey.

Inyo County coroner's officials said Monday that 60-year-old John Likely died from "multiple traumatic injuries" after he fell about 50 feet into a steep chute.

The Los Angeles Times reports Likely's body was found Friday near Mirror Lake at an elevation of about 11,450 feet. He was reported missing June 14.

Crews spent nearly a week searching for Likely in steep, rugged terrain after he didn't reach Outpost Camp, where his two friends were waiting.

The newspaper says Likely had hiked Mount Whitney five times previously and had spent the last 30 years tackling trails with the two friends. His friends told authorities that it wasn't uncommon for Likely to move at a slower pace when hiking.
